How to Write a Great Resume Objective

by Carlie Evie

Objective: To write a compelling article to help resume writers capture the attention of potential employers using a great resume objective.

When reading your resume, the job objective is the first thing people will see. A good objective will be concise, upbeat, and grab the reader's attention.

Also, it needs to be tailored to each position you apply for. You need to tell the reader exactly why you want to work for them. Here are some tips for getting that perfect objective:

Keep the objective neutral, and state what the job is that you are seeking. Instead of stating your desire, state how you can benefit the company.

For instance, instead of writing, "A position in which I can grow and use my skills, etc." be specific about the job, as in, "A position as an administrative assistant in a fast-paced office environment." Keep the focus in the objective on the company and position. Consider what the manager would want in a new employee.

One title per resume! Don't write a laundry list of all the things you're willing to do. Specifically answer a question in the resume objective: "What job are you seeking?

The objective should consist of no more than one sentence. Two sentences will serve fine as long as both are short and to the point. Remember, a long objective is not going to get any attention.

Don't state the obvious. Don't mention your hopes for advancement; everyone wants that. Focus on the job. It's needless to reach for the next job before you've even landed this one! Avoid being redundant in your objective. Don't tell prospective employers that you're hard-working and responsible. Let all your experience and skills do the talking here!

Now if you can keep all these tips in mind and write a good resume objective from the point of view of an employee, you will have a greater chance of landing the perfect job!
